STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Dongan Hills resident Percy C. Ward, 87, a retired engineer who was devoted to his family, died Sunday at home.

Born and raised in Pensacola, Fla., he settled in Dongan Hills in 1938.

Mr. Ward studied engineering at Pensacola (Fla.) Maritime School.

He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and enjoyed regaling his friends and family with stories about his days at sea.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Longtime Dongan Hills resident Percy C. Ward, 87, a retired engineer who was devoted to his family, died Sunday at home.

Born and raised in Pensacola, Fla., he settled in Dongan Hills in 1938.

Mr. Ward studied engineering at Pensacola (Fla.) Maritime School.

He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and enjoyed regaling his friends and family with stories about his days at sea.

Mr. Ward worked for 40 years as an engineer at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, Charleston.

He most loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Angela; his son, James; his daughters, Veronica Gisonda and Michele Ward, and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's R.C. Church, both in Dongan Hills. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere.
